How to Remove Background from Video: A Step-by-Step Guide

To remove a background from video, choose a short clip in an AI background remover, process it, and check the moving subject before downloading. Use transparent WebM when you want to add the background later. Choose a background MP4 when you want a finished video with a color or image behind the subject.

You do not need to film against a green screen. This guide uses VideoBGRemover in a desktop browser to remove a plant-filled indoor background from an eight-second presenter clip. You can see the original and the actual output below, including the edge details that still need checking.

Choose AI removal or green-screen keying

For an ordinary room or outdoor background, start with AI removal. It separates the subject from the surrounding scene without asking you to pick a single background color. A clearly visible person with some contrast against the background is a useful starting point.

For footage shot against an evenly lit green screen, color keying gives you direct control over the color to remove. It can also let you adjust the edge and green spill in a video editor. A green plant behind a presenter is not a green screen: removing everything green can remove parts you wanted to keep.

1. Choose your video and a short section

Open the video background remover and choose your file. The tool accepts MP4, MOV, and WebM video. It checks the media details before uploading; your video is uploaded for cloud processing.

Start with five to ten seconds that include movement. A still pose can hide a problem that appears when a person turns their head or raises a hand. Keep the original file so you can compare the same moments later.

Use the Trim video control to select the part you need. Play that selection before continuing. Check that it includes the beginning and end of the action, without cutting off a word if the video has speech.

Processing requires sign-in. The current sign-in screen offers 30 credits after a first sign-in; check the offer shown for your account. Processing uses one credit per second, rounded up. Your balance and your account's maximum clip length are separate limits, so enough credits alone do not make every video length eligible.

2. Remove the background

Click Remove background. Wait for the upload and processing to finish, then look for Ready to export. An upload reaching 100% means the file has arrived; it does not mean the finished cutout is ready.

For this walkthrough, we processed an eight-second, 1920 × 1080 clip at 25 fps. It shows one presenter speaking in front of plants. This clip has no audio track.

The downloaded WebM kept the eight-second duration and 1920 × 1080 frame size at 25 fps. The room was removed and the presenter remained, but some fine detail along the hair and shoulder on the left side of the frame was lost. Use the result at its intended size before deciding whether those edges work for your project.

3. Check the result in motion

Switch between Original and Result to compare the same moment. Then open Background and try a light and a dark color. A checkerboard confirms where the cutout is transparent; a contrasting color makes an uneven edge easier to notice.

Play the whole selection, then pause at the most demanding moments:

Hair and shoulders: look for missing strands, rough outlines, or a piece of the old background attached to the subject.
Moving hands: check whether fingers disappear or the outline changes when the hand crosses the body.
Edge stability: watch for a boundary that flickers or jumps between frames. One good-looking still frame is not enough.

Our sample is mainly a head-and-shoulders shot. It is useful for checking that outline, but it does not show how a fast hand gesture or several moving people will turn out. Include those actions in your own short test when they matter.

Check sound separately

For a source with audio, VideoBGRemover's processing workflow preserves an audio track in the output. Listen to the downloaded file, including the start and end of the selected section, and check that speech stays in sync with lip movement. Sound may be re-encoded during export.

The demonstration above is silent because its source has no audio track. A mute button in the player does not prove that a file contains sound. If your output is silent, first check that the original contains audio and that both the player and your device are unmuted.

4. Download transparent WebM or a background MP4

Your choice depends on where you will use the result.

Keep the background transparent

In Export, choose Download transparent video for the WebM. Changing a preview background does not add that color to this transparent download.

A player may display transparent areas against black. Before assuming the removal failed, put the file over a contrasting background in a compatible application. Test the actual destination: browser and codec support vary, and a .webm filename alone does not guarantee that every editor will import its transparency correctly. Export a finished MP4

In Background, choose a solid color or upload your own background image. Then return to Export, open Change format, and choose Background MP4. Wait for that export to finish and download the MP4.

The MP4 uses the selected background. Keep the WebM as well if you may want a different background later; the finished MP4 does not keep a separate transparent subject layer.

For an editing handoff, the current ProRes export is limited to eligible clips up to ten seconds at 1080p. Check that the receiving editor accepts it before exporting. The ProRes 4444 vs 422 comparison explains why 422 is not a substitute when you need an alpha channel.

If the cutout still looks wrong

A different export format will not restore a missing hand or repair an uneven outline. First check the processed result over a contrasting background. If the subject is incomplete, try a better-lit section with less motion blur or a shot where the subject stands farther from a busy background.

Before using your final video, open the downloaded file in its destination, play it from start to finish, and check the edges, background, and sound there. Start with a short sample in the video background remover, then process the longer section once you know the result fits your use.
