ProRes 4444 vs 422: Quality, Alpha, and File Size

Compare ProRes 4444 vs 422 for image quality, alpha channels, and file size. Choose an editing or transparent handoff format without wasting storage.

Choose ProRes 4444 when your file needs transparency or you need to preserve a 4:4:4 source. For ordinary footage without an alpha channel, ProRes 422 is usually the more practical editing choice, with smaller files to store and transfer. For client work, start with the codec named in the delivery specification.

A lower-third animation needs its transparent background so the next editor can place it over footage. A finished interview with its background already in place usually needs no alpha channel. That difference often decides which format to export.

What changes in color and image quality?

Both codecs can store a 1920 × 1080 frame. The difference is how much color detail they keep: in 4:2:2, color has half the horizontal sampling resolution of brightness; in 4:4:4, color is sampled at full resolution. This is called chroma sampling, and it can matter at sharp colored edges, especially graphics that will be resized or composited again.

Bit depth describes the number of tonal values a channel can represent. More values give you finer steps between tones, which can help preserve smooth gradients during processing. Image dimensions determine the pixel count; bit depth determines the tonal precision.

Start with the source you actually have

If your camera recorded 4:2:0 video, exporting it as 4444 will not reconstruct the color detail discarded during recording. The same applies to an 8-bit source: putting it in a higher-bit-depth file does not recover missing original tonal values.

New titles, rendered graphics, and composites can still benefit from a 4444 export. Those added elements have their own color and transparency requirements, even when the camera footage started as 4:2:0. Choose the export format for the complete timeline.

For a straightforward interview edit, compare a demanding short section in both formats. Check moving edges and gradients at the intended viewing size, then zoom in on any visible artifacts. Use that comparison to decide whether the larger master is useful for your footage.

422 HQ is not a substitute for 4444 alpha

ProRes 422 HQ uses a higher data rate than standard 422, but it remains a 10-bit, 4:2:2 format without an alpha channel. It is worth considering when a delivery specification requires it or your workflow needs more headroom within the 422 family.

ProRes 4444 XQ is a higher-data-rate option for demanding compositing and mastering workflows. Choose it when the workflow or delivery specification calls for the extra headroom and you can accommodate the larger files.

Transparency is the decisive difference

An alpha channel stores opacity. It lets a title, product cutout, or presenter sit over a new background without a solid rectangle around it. Of these two codecs, only ProRes 4444 can carry that channel.

MOV is a container that can hold ProRes 422, ProRes 4444, or another codec. To check whether a .mov file carries transparency, look at its codec and alpha channel. A 4444 file can still be fully opaque if the source has no transparency or the export leaves alpha out.

If a transparent animation arrives with a black background, first put it above another clip in an editor that supports its format. Some players display transparency against black. If the black rectangle remains in the composite, check the source composition and export again with alpha enabled.

How much larger is ProRes 4444?

Here's how file sizes compare at 1920 × 1080 and 29.97 fps, estimated from Apple's published target bitrates. The ProRes 4444 estimate excludes alpha data.

To estimate storage in decimal gigabytes, use GB = Mbps × seconds ÷ 8,000. The table covers video data only; allow extra space for audio, alpha, and container overhead. Actual size also varies with the content because ProRes uses variable bitrate. For a different resolution or frame rate, use its corresponding target bitrate.

At these settings, 4444 uses about 2.24× the target bitrate of standard 422, or 1.5× that of 422 HQ, before adding alpha data.

For a ten-minute video, that works out to roughly 11 GB in 422 versus 25 GB in 4444. If the recipient doesn't need transparency or a 4:4:4 master, confirm whether 422 will do before exporting the larger file. If transparency is required, keep an alpha-capable format—switching to 422 removes that channel.

For multistream editing, test playback with the number of clips and effects you expect to use. Higher data rates put more demand on storage throughput. Playback also depends on hardware decoding, drive performance, and the editing application.

If a file looks washed out in one player, check its color-space tags and the player's gamma interpretation. Compare it in the receiving editor with the project's color settings applied before changing the export codec.

Check one short export before the full handoff

Export a few representative seconds using the intended settings, then import the result into the receiving workflow. Confirm the codec and dimensions. If transparency matters, place the clip above both a light and a dark background and inspect the edges during motion. Verify sound if the asset needs it.

Keep the original project and source media until the recipient accepts the file. Send the verified export details with it, for example: “ProRes 4444 MOV, alpha included, 1920 × 1080, 29.97 fps.” This gives the next editor the information they need to import and check the asset.
