How to Blur Background in Video: Online, CapCut, and Desktop

To blur the background in a video while keeping the person clear, separate the subject from the scene, then blur only what sits behind them. An online background-blur tool does this automatically. In an editor, you can place a sharp subject cutout over a blurred copy of the same clip, or use a mask to protect the subject.

Choose a method for your recording

Background blur is different from canvas blur. Canvas blur fills empty space around a video, such as the sides of a vertical clip in a horizontal frame. It does not soften the original room behind the person. A blur effect applied to the whole clip makes the person blurry too.

If you need to hide a face, address, or license plate, use a tool that lets you cover and track that area. A soft background effect is not reliable privacy redaction.

Blur a video background online

Blur the background in CapCut

Use two synchronized copies of your video: a blurred full clip underneath and a sharp subject cutout above it. CapCut's official desktop and mobile instructions describe this approach. Check the installed app's labels and any Pro badge before committing to the edit.

Layering diagram: keep both copies at the same start time, scale, and position.

On desktop

1. Import your video, add it to the timeline, and duplicate it onto a track above the original.
2. Apply Blur from Effects to the lower clip.
3. Select the upper clip and use Remove BG → Auto removal.
4. Adjust the lower layer's blur, preview the edit, then export.

On mobile

1. Create a New project with the video and apply a blur effect.
2. Add the original video again as an Overlay.
3. Align the overlay and remove its background with Remove BG.
4. Preview the full clip and export to your phone.

If the person is also blurry, check which layer the effect targets. If a second silhouette appears when they move, align the copies' start points and trims. Keep only one audible copy of the original audio to avoid doubled speech. This is a useful method when you want to continue cutting, captioning, or adjusting the video in the same project.

Blur a background in Premiere

A mask lets you decide where blur applies. Use it when automatic subject removal leaves an outline you need to control. Premiere requires access to the desktop editor; this is not a free-browser workflow.

1. Put the clip in a sequence and apply Gaussian Blur.
2. In Effect Controls, create a mask around the person. Use a drawn shape for an outline that does not fit a simple ellipse.
3. Enable Invert so the effect applies outside the subject.
4. Adjust blur and Feather while watching the edge. Feather softens the transition; too much can soften the subject too.
5. Track the mask through the shot, then correct frames where it slips. Export a short sample before rendering the whole sequence.

Adobe documents mask feathering and inversion and the mask-tracking controls. The exact panel layout depends on your version. A simple mask suits a steady speaker; fine hair and overlapping moving subjects need more detailed work than a single shape can provide.

Blur a video background on iPhone or Android

For an eligible Cinematic video on iPhone, open it in Photos → Edit, select the depth control, adjust the slider, and save. If focus moves to the wrong person, you can change the focus subject at that point in the clip.

This depends on the recording and device. Apple's current guide also describes adding a Cinematic effect to Video-mode recordings made with the Main camera on iPhone 18 Pro models.
